Taylor Swift has beaten Adele and Lady Gaga to be named the highest-earning pop artist of 2011 by trade publication Billboard.

The 22-year-old earned $35,719,902 (£22.7m) in 2011 from a combination of music sales, royalties and touring. As to where’s all this money from? Most of it was from her Speak Now tour, which was widely successful, but Taylor also made big bucks off her album and from royalties, since she wrote all the songs on the record.

Irish rockers U2 took second place with $32m (£20m) thanks to their 360 tour, seen by more than seven million people.

Kenny Chesney came third, followed by last year's highest earner, Lady Gaga, while Adele came 10th.

The British singer had the biggest-selling album of the year, but her earnings were affected by the cancellation of her North American tour for throat surgery.

While the phenomenal success of album 21 helped Adele earn millions, the Grammy and Brit Award winning singer had to cancel a string of live dates including the US leg of her tour after a recurring throat problem, explaining why Adele didn’t feature higher up in the list.

Taylor pushed last year's highest earner Lady Gaga into fourth. The 'Born This Way' star earned $25.4 million, which put her behind U2 and Kenny Chesney who were second and third respectively.
